Bharathi's Contribution to Tamil Literature

Subramanya Bharati's Life and Work

Subramanya Bharati (11 December 1882 – 11 December 1921), also known as "Puthumai Pithan" (literally, "the father of newness"), was a Tamil poet, journalist, social reformer, and Indian independence activist.

Bharathi's literary career began at an early age. At the age of 11, he wrote his first poem, "Enneramum Nanneramum" ("Always Happy"). He later went on to write more than 800 poems, many of which are considered masterpieces of Tamil literature.

Bharathi's poetry is characterized by its patriotism, its celebration of the Tamil language and culture, and its social commentary. He was a strong advocate for women's rights and social justice.

Bharathi was also a journalist and activist. He founded two newspapers, "India" and "The Swadesamitran". He used his newspapers to promote his ideas about social reform and Indian independence.

Bharathi was arrested and imprisoned several times for his political activities. However, he never gave up his fight for freedom. He died in 1921, at the age of 39.
