British Grand Prix: Hamilton triumphs in wet-dry classic
Russell makes perfect start to #F1Sprint
George Russell made a perfect start to the British Grand Prix weekend by claiming victory in the Sprint, ahead of Carlos Sainz and Max Verstappen.
The Mercedes driver got the jump on Sainz at the start and controlled the race from there, despite a late safety car period. Verstappen finished third, ahead of Sergio Perez and Fernando Alonso.
The race was run in wet conditions, but the track dried out towards the end, making it a difficult race for the drivers. Hamilton was able to adapt to the changing conditions better than anyone else, and he took the victory by a comfortable margin.
The win is Hamilton's eighth at Silverstone, and it moves him into second place in the all-time winners' list at the circuit. It is also his first win of the 2022 season.
Verstappen disappointed with third place
Max Verstappen was disappointed to finish third in the Sprint, but he admitted that Hamilton was the better driver on the day.
"I think we had a good car today, but Lewis was just too quick," said Verstappen. "He was able to control the race from the start, and we couldn't do anything to challenge him."
Verstappen will start the British Grand Prix from third place on the grid, behind Hamilton and Russell. He will be hoping for a better result in the main race, but he knows that it will be a difficult task to beat Hamilton.
