Brent Venables shares status updates on 2 standout Oklahoma WRs ahead of opener
Marvin Mims, Theo Wease "probable" for season opener
Oklahoma Sooners head coach Brent Venables provided injury updates on standout wide receivers Marvin Mims and Theo Wease ahead of the season opener against UTEP on Saturday. Both players are "probable" to play after missing the majority of fall camp with hamstring injuries.
Mims, Wease key pieces of Oklahoma offense
Mims, a First Team All-Big 12 selection last season, led the Sooners with 54 catches for 705 yards and five touchdowns in 2021. Wease, a transfer from Mississippi, caught 22 passes for 295 yards and two touchdowns last year. Both players are expected to be key contributors to the Oklahoma offense this season.
Venables said that both Mims and Wease have been practicing this week and are expected to be full participants in Saturday's game. However, he added that the team will continue to monitor their progress and make a final decision on their status closer to kickoff.
The Sooners are hoping to have both Mims and Wease available for the season opener, as they will be counted on to provide quarterback Dillon Gabriel with a reliable target in the passing game. Oklahoma is looking to bounce back from a disappointing 6-7 record last season and return to the Big 12 title game.
