Meyerbeer's Le Prophète Returns to the U.S.
Roving critic Susan Hall attended the first U.S. staging of Meyerbeer's Le Prophète in nearly half a century at Bard College. Hall notes that the production, led by Leon Botstein, had its strengths but ultimately fell short due to the opera's inherent weaknesses.
Anna Netrebko to Star in Rome Tosca
The Russian state agency Tass reports that Anna Netrebko will star in a new production of Tosca in Rome on January 14. The production will be conducted by Daniele Gatti and will feature Yusif Eyvazov as Cavaradossi. Netrebko has previously sung the role of Tosca at the Metropolitan Opera and the Royal Opera House, among other major opera houses.
WEB De Ana's Opera Offers Few Surprises
The new opera WEB De Ana by Australian composer Dean Gordon has received mixed reviews from critics. The work, which premiered at the Melbourne Festival, is based on the life of Argentinian artist Ana Mendieta. Critics have praised the opera's ambitious score and libretto, but some have found the work to be too long and lacking in dramatic tension.
Met Faces Tosca Cast Changes
The Metropolitan Opera has announced that Marcelo Alvarez has withdrawn from six performances of Tosca next spring due to a scheduling conflict. Alvarez will be replaced by Vittorio Grigolo in the role of Cavaradossi. The Met's production of Tosca will star Sonya Yoncheva in the title role and will be conducted by Emmanuel Villaume.
